5 Ways Hugs and Exercise Are More Similar Than You Think

The 4 Reasons You Are Not Losing Weight and How to Fix Them

Nov 12, 2015

“For folks who are new to the program, the reason there are amazing people like April, or even me, this isn’t Jonathan Bailor’s magic diet program, as you know if you’ve followed this for any period of time.  I spent 15 years looking over 13 hundred studies, and I’m not a doctor.  I was a personal trainer 15 years ago.  I spent most of my professional life as an engineer at Microsoft.  What I did, what I was able to do because I’m a geek, is to look at unbiased, because I didn’t really have any public persona back in the day.  I didn’t need to defend any previous positions, just to say look we were presented with some dietary stuff in the ‘60s, a lot of stuff has changed since then. What are we doing?  At the end of the day it’s saying hey, what foods provide us with most of what’s essential for human health, and what food don’t?  When you eat more of the foods that provide you with what you need to thrive, and less of the foods that are addictive and toxic, you live better.  I mean, don’t take my word for it, you don’t need to take my word for it.” More in: How To Pick Between Healthy and Happy http://pages.sanesolution.com/how-to-pick-between-healthy-and-happy/ #SANE

“That’s why I’m so committed to SANE because it’s something I can maintain long-term.  To be able to say I’ve been SANE for a whole year and not ever had to take a break, or I’ll have to go on some cheat days, or go switch things up a bit because SANE is getting old and boring.  No, I’m learning new recipes, I’m learning new ways to make my smoothies, I’m learning new ways to help my family, it’s pretty amazing what’s happening.  Do I still have a long way to go, and am I still progressing?  Yeah, absolutely.  But it’s looking at the long-term and making that the way you run your life.  Then you can’t help but thrive, personally, professionally, in your physical development, your financial development, in every area of your life.  SANE starts to make a huge difference.” More in: How To Pick Between Healthy and Happy http://pages.sanesolution.com/how-to-pick-between-healthy-and-happy/ #SANE

“…of course everyone has their own values and has to apply this to their own lives and what matters to them, but I think far too few people sit down and actually identify their values and then look at their lives to see if they’re living according to those values. When you just take a few moments to do that, then whether it involves changing what you’re eating, buying less sugar, spending more time with your kids, even when they’re whining or fighting. Those decisions are getting you where you want to be long term. I feel so grateful now, after being married for 17 years and having four kids, that I can look back on the last 17 years and see how every single choice I’ve made every day to keep going, to keep working, to keep trying, has brought beautiful results to my family. Especially going SANE, I can say it’s been over a year now that I’ve been eating completely SANE, like 99 percent SANE. I can look back and see how my life, my energy, my body, my family has changed for the better. Has every day been totally easy? Not at all. But is it worth it? I would say absolutely yes.” More in: How To Pick Between Healthy and Happy http://pages.sanesolution.com/how-to-pick-between-healthy-and-happy/ #SANE

“That’s the key April, is now you have not only a correct map, but channeling I know someone we both are big fans of, and hopefully our listeners are fans of as well, which is the late Stephen Covey, you have a compass. Which actually means, no matter where you are, it’s going to point to true North, or it’s going to point to the right direction. Now it is totally up to you how quickly you walk.  I mean some of us – we want to get in a jet and we want to just jet there as fast as we can.  Some of us might just want to take a casual stroll, and we might even turn around and walk backwards sometimes, and that’s our choice.  But at least now you know that you’ve got that compass, you’ve got that map, and the choice truly is yours now, how quickly you take that journey. How dedicated you are to that journey – that’s up to you, but the option is there.  So I think that’s really exciting.” More in: How To Get 80% of the Benefits of “Healthy Living” with 1% of the Effort http://pages.sanesolution.com/how-to-get-80-of-the-benefits-of-healthy-living-with-1-of-the-effort/ #SANE

“So like anything in life, the more lax and casual your approach, the slower the results will be.  I mean of course that’s true. You’ll still be healthier, you’ll still be fitter, it’s still a good thing to do.  But SANE eating is radically easier to do than starving yourself, and it’s radically more health-full than starving yourself.  But that doesn’t mean it doesn’t require effort.  Any change, I mean even negative habits take effort when you’re initially developing them, but once you develop them that’s when the effort goes away.  Unless it’s something totally unnatural, like starving yourself, because hunger never gets easier.  But enjoying vegetables does get easier, you acquire a taste for it.  So your results will be directly proportional to the effort you put into going SANE, just like your results will be proportional to the effort you put into anything in life.” More in: How To Get 80% of the Benefits of “Healthy Living” with 1% of the Effort http://pages.sanesolution.com/how-to-get-80-of-the-benefits-of-healthy-living-with-1-of-the-effort/ #SANE

“It’s going to readjust your taste-buds because you are going to be eating more bitter foods, and that will re-sensitize you to sweet.  So things that used to taste not so sweet, will start to taste sweeter.  Things like regular soda will taste too sweet and become unappealing.  So you’re addressing vitamin and mineral deficiencies off the bat, that happens instantaneously.  You’re crowding out a bunch of other nonsense.  You’re helping your body to become more accustomed to running on fat, versus sugar, which is going to help it burn fat more easily, which his going to help you slim down, which is great.  And you are going to automatically retrain your palate to detect sweetness, to be more sensitive to sweet, which will help you to avoid nonsense foods and to enjoy delicious, healthy foods – sorry, healthy foods and to perceive them as delicious. So that’s how that one percent can give you 80 percent of more of the benefit.” More in: How To Get 80% of the Benefits of “Healthy Living” with 1% of the Effort http://pages.sanesolution.com/how-to-get-80-of-the-benefits-of-healthy-living-with-1-of-the-effort/ #SANE

“A lot of lifestyle programs are about eat this for breakfast now. Eat this for lunch. And that’s why they never work because that’s not how life works. That would be like saying, “Hey, the way to learn math is to memorize the combination of every possible…” You can’t do that. You have to learn the rules then you apply the rules, right? So the rule here for smoothies is you have to ask yourself, “Am I drinking this smoothie because I want to drink something that is really sweet and green? Or do I want to get a lot of vegetables?” Maybe for breakfast I didn’t eat vegetables and I want to eat just a bunch of vegetables. So that’s going to be a different smoothie than hey I want to help my children eat more vegetables, but I’m going to have to address the taste. So there is no one right formulation for a green smoothie. You have to look at what your goal is for that smoothie.” More in: How To Make Yummy Green Smoothies That Work Like Magic http://pages.sanesolution.com/how-to-make-yummy-green-smoothies-that-work-like-magic #SANE

“A lot of things that are neat, especially as the children get older, there are things completely independent of weight or what we would generally perceive as health that green smoothies can help with. Because what is a green smoothie? At the end of the day, a green smoothie is the single most concentrated source of real food nutrition you will ever take in. There is no more efficient way to get a maximum amount of that which heals your body into your body, than a green smoothie. For example, let’s say you have an adolescent male child who has an acne breakout. You could put a bunch of toxic acid on his face, which is what some of the prescription medications are. I tried some of those myself and I would never do that again. Or you could try to eat more green smoothies and cut down on some other substances in your diet. You know, your skin is often times a reflection of what’s going on inside your body. So that extremely high dose of nutrition, things that you wouldn’t think about they can affect, they can affect really really strongly. So that’s another good tool to have in the toolbox.” More in: How To Make Yummy Green Smoothies That Work Like Magic http://pages.sanesolution.com/how-to-make-yummy-green-smoothies-that-work-like-magic #SANE

“In a SANE lifestyle, we’re not doing ounces, calories, precision, or scale measuring. We don’t have an obesity epidemic and no one’s struggling with their health because they don’t have to the gram accurate measurements of what they’re eating. So what we want to focus on is ease, simplicity, sanity. So a serving of spinach is what you can fit in your hands cupped like this. That’s one serving of raw spinach. That makes a lot of sense because if you have a five-year-old child, what they can hold like this is a lot smaller than what your six-foot-five, eighteen-year-old football playing son can hold. So one serving of spinach varies by person. So we want to use our hands as the baseline for that. So what you hold in two hands cupped like this is a serving.” More in: How To Make Yummy Green Smoothies That Work Like Magic http://pages.sanesolution.com/how-to-make-yummy-green-smoothies-that-work-like-magic #SANE

“What I suggest is you make modular meals. You make mostly SANE meals, where you’re going to eat the SANE part. Then if your family wants some other things on the side, or something for dessert, and they have some things that they want, let them help plan the meals. But plan it so you can actually all sit down and eat together and find common ground. I mean, mostly you can have a vegetable at dinner that everybody will eat, or at least learn to eat, and I’ll have a variety. Then you can usually have some sort of nutrient dense protein that everybody will eat. And whole food fats, you just kind of put it out there. Then the extra stuff that they might want to add in, okay that’s fine. You won’t be eating it but you’re not looking down at them for eating it. But you’re making sure you’re using food as a way to unify your family.” More in: How To Get Your Family To WANT To Stop Eating Junk http://pages.sanesolution.com/how-to-get-your-family-to-want-to-stop-eating-junk-2 #SANE

“The first thing is being really flexible with your expectations, because if you think that the moment that you read The Calorie Myth or the moment that you start going SANE, that your whole family is going to say, “Oh my goodness! Mother, thank you so much for helping us learn how important vegetables are! We didn’t know, and now we’re so excited. What vegetables can I take for lunch?” I mean, no one is going to say that. So you’ve got to be flexible knowing that this may just be you for a while, and it may take some time to acclimate your children and spouse.” More in: How To Get Your Family To WANT To Stop Eating Junk http://pages.sanesolution.com/how-to-get-your-family-to-want-to-stop-eating-junk-2 #SANE

“So if your family does something that not every other family does, and you’ve done that, are there ways you can learn from that? Like how did you make that happen? What did you do to make that happen? And can you learn from that experience and tie that experience back to SANE eating? One thing I can promise you is I bet the way you made that work wasn’t by white knuckling it and demanding that everyone comply right out of the gate. There was some other approach. So maybe that would be helpful.” More in: How To Get Your Family To WANT To Stop Eating Junk http://pages.sanesolution.com/how-to-get-your-family-to-want-to-stop-eating-junk-2 #SANE

“…just double the number of vegetables that you’re currently eating in your family. Double it. Just once, then in a couple of weeks, double it again or increase it until up to ten servings a day for each family member. Just this idea of doubling, that’s so easy to do.” More in the Overweight Kids Need Your Help NOW, Here’s 4 Reasons Why http://pages.sanesolution.com/overweight-kids-need-your-help-now-heres-4-reasons-why/ #SANE

“The goal is progress, not perfection. Just try to eat a little bit more like what Grandma would have served her kids, right? If Grandma wouldn’t have served this, if this didn’t exist, and then of course, when you get to that point, we can talk about how to make it even better.” More in the Overweight Kids Need Your Help NOW, Here’s 4 Reasons Why http://pages.sanesolution.com/overweight-kids-need-your-help-now-heres-4-reasons-why/ #SANE

3 Things You Must Know if Your Child is Overweight

Oct 8, 2015

“I think that we need to recognize that it really isn’t our fault or our child’s fault. I think that’s one of the major mindset shifts that you helped me to be able to achieve and the same with my daughter. We just thought it was because we weren’t working hard enough. We thought it was because we weren’t doing a good enough job counting our calories, we weren’t disciplined enough, we were too weak. Those types of things. That’s what we thought. When you can step back and actually learn the real cause of being overweight and learn that we’ve all just been given so much wrong information, thinking that if I just eat ten tortilla chips and one Twinkie instead of eating half the bag that that’s going to help me to achieve my health and wellness goals. That’s not how it works.” More in the 3 Things You Must Know if Your Child is Overweight http://pages.sanesolution.com/three-things-you-must-know-if-your-child-is-overweight/ #SANE

“Eating food, not being hungry — the idea that we have to choose between being fueled and energetic and thriving and healthy. That’s actually ridiculous and doesn’t even make sense. That does not even make sense to be a choice, but if the choice is, eat as much as you want, whenever you want, eat when you’re hungry until you’re completely full and satisfied, just do it from sources that are nourishing and SANE for your body, is that going to be the easiest thing ever? No? Do you have a choice? Yes! And is it easier than being overweight and diabetic and having heart disease and depressed and being discriminated against? I would argue it’s radically easier.” More in the 3 Things You Must Know if Your Child is Overweight http://pages.sanesolution.com/three-things-you-must-know-if-your-child-is-overweight/ #SANE

“I love that next-action April and I will give one layer on top of that to fully empower you to have that conversation, which I am totally supportive of and that is actually my mother did for me, when I was younger before all of this. She started me on the path to SANEity. She would always frame healthful choices as she’d always say what to eat more of. We always try to do that in SANE in general. So, it’s not hey, stop eating this, don’t do this, bad, no, no, if no is the most frequent word you use with your children or spouse or anyone it’s probably not going to work out too well, so it’s eat more of blank __________, eat more non-starchy vegetables, eat more nutrient dense protein and then, so you can be better at or have more fun at, blank _________. So, my mother knew that sports were really important to me even growing up. I remember watching the Rocky movies. She would always say, eat more spinach or eat more X so you can be like Rocky, so you can be like Superman. It’s not don’t do this because I said so, it’s do this so that you can achieve X, which is interesting to you.” More in the 3 Things You Must Know if Your Child is Overweight http://pages.sanesolution.com/three-things-you-must-know-if-your-child-is-overweight/ #SANE

"I have to be able to do this for the rest of my life. And the question is, can I eat SANEly? Can I live this life I am living right now for the rest of my life? Absolutely. Yes. No problem. I go to bed full and happy every single night. I wake up and I’m excited for breakfast. I’m eating throughout the day. I love the food I’m eating. My kids and my family, we are all eating healthy together. It’s pretty awesome.”

“If you are on the freeway and you want to go 60 miles per hour, you are only going to stay at 60 miles per hour as long as you keep your foot on the gas pedal, so whatever you do to reach that point of nutritional serenity, or a healthy, happy body image, if what got you there isn’t something you can maintain enjoyably, that’s the sticking point….

Oct 1, 2015

“The assumption is that your body works like an equation, that you can just subtract 500 calories from one side of the calorie equation – so if you just subtract 500 calories from the calories inside, the calories outside don’t change. That’s 100%, unequivocally, not disputed by anyone who knows anything about human biology, false. If you eat 500 fewer calories, you will burn fewer calories. Bottom line, you will be cold, you will be tired, you will be hungry, your brain will be foggy.”

“I have a list of things I read every day, I just create a little note on my phone, and it says, read this every morning. And it reminds me who I am, what my purpose is, what my mission is, why I am waking up, what I am going to do today. And yes, having ripped arms is not on the list, it didn’t even make the list. But having a healthy, strong body and being here for my family definitely is.” More in the SANEShow How To Lose That Last 10 lbs. at http://pages.sanesolution.com/how-to-lose-that-last-10-lbs/ #SANE
